I had a lot of help in making this song - BIG THANKS to Grammy Nominated Dominic Liberati for producing this song (and "Monster"). Dom is a close friend and has really helped me grow musically, and I couldn't have pulled this off with out him. "Change My Ways" also features Matt Musty on drums (Train, Grace Potter, Gwen Stefani, Keith Urban). Matt absolutely killed it on this track, and it was so cool working with him. Mastering on "Change My Ways" was done by Igor Stolarsky - Igor is an audio wizard and I can't even pretend to understand how he works his magic, but he made this track sound awesome. Last but not least, big thanks to Ashley Castro for taking the artwork photo!

This song is my 2nd single (following "Monster") and I'm really proud of how this one turned out. "Change My Ways" started out as just a cool bluesy descending guitar riff that I wasn't quite sure what to do with, and it ended up turning into a song that came from a place of trying to take responsibility for everything in my life. I know for me, I can easily fall into a "victim mentality", or a story about how I'm "doomed" when life isn't exactly going my way, and this song is about an attempt to quit falling into that trap and instead, imperfectly living life on life's terms and changing what I can.

If you do dig the song and don't mind sharing it with friends or on your social media platform of choice, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Lastly, stay tuned for some show announcements for early 2020 where I'll be playing this song (and hopefully a few new ones as well).

Thanks and hope you have an great Holiday Season!

All the best,

When organic material is sent to landfills, this results in the release of Carbon Dioxide and Methane gases, which contribute to the greenhouse effect.

Yamaha Guitar Group (Line 6, Ampeg) saw an opportunity to reduce waste from our corporate facility that gets sent to landfills, which is an essential part of “waste diversion”. A recent estimate from the Environmental Protection Agency predicted that up to one-fourth of all landfill waste could have been thrown into the compost and turned into nutrient-rich soil.

At the Calabasas YGG HQ we have two 5 gallon buckets in the two primary café locations, where employees can contribute any compostable waste. Currently, we are concentrated on collecting coffee grinds, veggie scraps, papers, tea bags, and any other organic matter that isn’t meat, dairy, or oils. YGG has partnered with “The Muse School”, which is a local private school that has their own composting, garden and sustainability program. YGG makes weekly compost drop offs, which helps the Muse School’s garden to promote healthy soil.

Composting at YGG was implemented on April 12, 2019 and as of July 20th, we’ve dropped off 338 lbs (153 kg) of compostable material! In addition, as a part of implementing the compost program at YGG, we have switched to using unbleached coffee filters, and have made non-plastic cutlery available as well. We are always looking for new ways to support our community and to do our part to help our environment.

I recently had a nice chat with Buzz Music, and they wrote up a really cool review of "Monster" and included our interview as well- check it out here or read the content of the review and interview below:

"

Powerhouse Rocker Kevin Eldridge Makes His Debut With “Monster”

Based right here in Los Angeles, California is the talented, singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kevin Eldridge. Originally from Harwich, MA, Kevin grew up on a steady diet of classic rock and blues music, which is reflected in his playing and songwriting. Kevin has previously played with Pawnshop Diamonds, Jamie Lynn Hart Band, Bell Bottom, Street Chalk, Lunar Rogue, Cardiac, Zero 1, Dixie N'ormus, Kaya Jones, LA Soul Project, and performs regularly at The Sunset Jam in West Hollywood. After playing in multiple bands in Boston and Los Angeles, Kevin is launching into the release of his first single with ease.

Kevin Eldridge makes his debut with his powerful single “Monster”, which was released in June 2019. The track features catchy and soul driven riffs and sultry vocals. “Monster” made of catchy leading electric guitar and instrumental elements, but also features unanticipated song developments through the flawless lyricism and emotional delivery. Kevin pour his heart and soul into every word and instrumental element The high energy single is an introspective representation on Kevin’s inner thoughts and emotions. Powerful and raw from start to finish, “Monster” is a spectacular debut for Los Angeles own, Kevin Eldridge. Be sure to keep up with Kevin for his future releases!

Hey Kevin, welcome to BuzzMusic! Was there something or someone in your life that inspired you to start making music?

Thanks for having me! My Parents made sure I grew up on a steady diet of classic rock, so I've always loved guitar and riff driven rock music. My Uncle Ed got my my first guitar when I was 13 and taught me my first few chords & riffs, and that really got me into playing guitar and music. Until semi-recently I had focused primarily on playing guitar, but in the last few years I wanted to be able to write and sing my own songs. I've also been really inspired by "Highly Suspect" - I really dig their style, and they grew up close to where I'm originally from (Harwich, MA) so that's been really inspiring to watch them make great music and see them take off.

What’s you debut single “Monster” about? What was the writing process like for your first release?

Ha, it's a bit of a heavy answer. Let's just say I didn't act like a gentlemen in one of my previous relationships, and it blew up in a pretty ugly way. I've grown up a lot since that time of my life, and "Monster" captures how I was feeling about myself during that time. It was kind of cathartic - I think part of me was still holding on to shame / guilt about how I behaved, and by putting it into a song and making it public, it's helped me make peace with the past. For the writing process, I typically have a handful of rock riffs that I'm working on or playing with, and I really liked the riff that's in the intro to "Monster". From there, it was about trying to tell the story and finding a melody that I liked and that meshed with riff & chord structure.

What artists influence your music?

Highly Suspect has been a really big recent influence on my writing and playing (I think you can hear it in "Monster" as well). I'm also a huge fan of Aerosmith, Slash, Muse, Royal Blood, and I think all of these bands seep their way into anything I write. I'm also really into The Maine and especially dig their approach to lyrics & melody.

What do you hope your listeners take away from your music?

First and foremost I hope they dig the song! There are still times when a killer riff will come on the radio (yes, I'm an elder millennial so I still listen to FM radio occasionally) and it gives me goosebumps, so I'm always aiming with anything I write to elicit an emotional reaction (aka "awwww $hit, turn that $hit up!). With the lyrics for "Monster", I tried to just tell the truth (even when it's about a part of me I'm not exactly proud of), so if it helps another person make peace with themselves, then that's awesome.

What’s next for Kevin Eldridge?

I'm planning on staying in writing mode for the near future and releasing some more singles, and then I'm planning to set up some shows for the LA area for later this year.

Going to the movie theater alone can be tough enough, but the thought of traveling alone can be daunting. What if I feel lonely? What will I do? Who will I talk to?

Being single for the last year or so has forced me to learn to do a lot of solo activity stuff - going out to the movies alone, going to see a show alone, even going out to dinner alone. It's been both uncomfortable, and liberating, and I've met some people just by being out there (it beats hanging on the couch). But in the last few years I've avoided taking solo trips or vacations - most of the travel I've done in the past was either with friends or a girlfriend (exception: Backpacking Europe back in 06' - more on that below).

So this past March I decided to go to Mexico City because I found a cheap fare ($250 R/T from LAX) and heard that it was awesome from friends who had been there previously. I booked an Airbnb room in the Condesa neighborhood for ~$30 a night, and went! I found that while there were definitely moments of feeling lonely or wishing I had a travel companion to talk to & experience this new to me city with, I would do it again (and plan to do some more solo travel again in the future). Facing loneliness or uncomfortable feelings in general can suck, but I'm learning that the more often I (imperfectly) face those feelings, the bigger life gets and less intimidating the next "facing of x,y, or z" fear situation feels.

Some tips that helped me navigate this previous trip to Mexico:

1) I brought a really good Sci-Fi book to get lost in ("The Expanse" series by James S.A. Corey at the time).

2) I sat at the bar at any restaurant I could, and often struck up conversation with nearby patrons (in either English or my really crappy Spanish).

3) The trip was only a quick 4 day trip.

4) Not putting pressure on myself to see all the sights. If I wanted to hang out in a cafe for 3 hours, I did that.

While writing this post, I realized that I traveled solo for the better part of a month back in 2006 after I did a semester abroad in Denmark. I was 21 and it was my first time in Europe, so I think my initial excitement overcame any resistance to traveling solo. I was also broke, but a benefit of that was that by staying in a lot of hostels it made it easy to meet other travelers and find short term travel companions to check out the local sites.

And to wrap up this post, there are definitely advantages to traveling solo, which can be summed up as:

DOING WHATEVER I WANT TO, WHENEVER I WANT TO!

Hope you enjoyed the post, and feel free to comment below with any of your solo travel experience / tips!

...or you've successfully gotten a few basics down, but feel stuck and like you're no longer improving.

Learning Guitar can be difficult (especially at first), and I've experienced frustration with guitar as well when either trying to learn a new song, style of music, or specific technique. Below are 4 common areas that people new to Guitar struggle with, and some suggestions on how to overcome these types of hurdles:

1) Practice Routine:

There is an old adage that goes something like: "How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice...".

It's true that you won't see improvements in your guitar playing without putting in some effort and time into learning the instrument. Practice is definitely critical, however it doesn't have to take over your life in order for you to see improvements in your playing. Here are a few tricks when it comes to practicing:

Don't leave your Guitar in it's case. It's much easier to pick up the Guitar when it's already out and ready to be played.

Commit to doing 10 minutes of practice per day. It's better to practice a little every day than to cram it all into one day per week.

Remember your "Why" - what got you interested in playing Guitar in the first place? Though practice can be boring, it helps to keep our long term goals and aspirations in mind when approaching a potentially boring practice session.

2) Sore Fingers & Hands:

Starting to play Guitar can be tough on the fingers and hands. The Guitar you're playing can make a big difference in playability - i.e. is it an Acoustic Guitar or Electric? What thickness (gauge) strings does the guitar have? How is the action (distance from the strings from the fretboard)? All of these factors can make a big difference. Still, some discomfort is normal when first learning guitar (especially when building up calluses on the fingertips). Here are a few tips to help minimize any pain / discomfort from playing Guitar:

Make sure you have the right Guitar for your body size. For example, children may want to start with a 3/4 scale Guitar.

Consider having your Guitar set up by a professional tech. Adjustments to the neck, action, or lowering the string gauge can make a guitar much more playable and easier on the hands/fingers.

Take breaks - Guitar playing can be uncomfortable, but it should not be outright painful. Start with shorter practice sessions and work up to longer ones.

Consider a private lesson so that an instructor can advise you on proper technique.

3) Barre Chords

Ahhh the dreaded Barre Chords - these chords can be extremely frustrating for the beginner Guitarist. A Barre Chord is essentially a chord in which your pointer finger presses down on all 6 strings, and the remaining 3 fingers can form a shape that can be moved up and down the neck.

(Example of a Barre Chord)

The tricky part with Barre Chords is that they require a combination of technique and hand strength to pull off. So when a new Guitar player is working on developing both, it can be a real challenge to learn these chords or play any songs where these chords are required. Here are a few tips to overcome any frustrations with Barre Chords:

Use "Partial Barre Chords" until you have developed enough strength and technique to play barre chords correctly.

To develop proper technique, play each string individually to ensure each note is ringing clearly.

If certain notes aren't ringing, watch your left hand angle and ensure there's enough clearance under each finger so that the adjacent strings can vibrate freely.

Start with Barre chords higher up the neck (i.e. on the 7th fret). The hardest Barre Chord is an "F" (on the 1st fret), so gradually work your way back to it from the higher starting positions.

4) Compare & Despair

Last but not least, it's so easy to compare & despair when it comes to learning Guitar. "Compare and Despair" means to look at other peers learning guitars, or our "Guitar Heros" and feel discouraged around our progress of learning Guitar. This can happen when we're learning anything new (I'm experiencing some now as I'm trying to learn to sing, which I'll have to write about in another post...), and there are a few strategies that can help us get past any compare & despair frustrations:

Remember learning is a lifelong activity, and is often non-linear. Meaning that we will likely experience "growth spurts" and "plateaus" and that this is normal and all part of learning anything new.

Repeat the mantra "Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly" - this means that it's OK to suck until we've learned the skills and put in the time necessary to improve.

Set some easy goals and knock them out - pick out a few songs that seem within your ability and focus on them for a while.

Listen to some music or go see a live show to re-ignite your enthusiasm for learning Guitar (or music in general).

I'm not exactly a bookworm by nature - I got into reading when I was around 16 or 17, and sometimes go a few weeks without cracking open a book (or listening on Audible). Lately I've been trying to get through a book or two each month, as I'm a believer in the phrase "you either wear out or rust out", so I'd like to keep my mind expanding (or at least being subjected to some quality material other than my minor-maybe-not-so-minor Instagram addiction...).

Here are a few books I've enjoyed recently:

1 - The Obstacle Is The Way - Ryan Holiday

This book served as my introduction to Stoicism. I felt the author did a great job of pulling quotes from Marcus and other classic Stoics and applying them to modern day life (with electronics, constant distractions, 24 hour news cycle, etc). One of my favorite topics in this book was about something called "The Process" - meaning when setting out at something, not to worry about the end goal (i.e. winning a competition, publishing a NY Times Best Seller), but rather to focus on the next task in front of you and execute.

"When it comes to our actions, disorder and distraction are death. The unordered mind loses track of what's in front of it - what matters - and gets distracted by thoughts of the future. The process is order, it keeps our perceptions in check and our actions in sync".

2 - Models - Mark Manson

Mark Manson is a well known blogger, and I first read his book "Models" sometime in 2016 when I was frustrated with online dating and reading anything I could get my hands on about dating and how to do it without going crazy. Fear of rejection has been something I've wrestled with over the years, and while I've read books on PUA (Pick-Up-Artists) techniques and approaches, that stuff never seemed to work for me. I came across Mark's book and I'm actually re-reading it now.

One of my favorite things about this book is his emphasis on self-improvement and satisfaction with one's own life as the best dating advice there is:

"The only real dating advice is self-improvement"

While the book is largely intended for the male reader, I think it's worth a read for anyone who wants to hear a modern day take on dating that doesn't give you the sleazy, post-cheat-meal-guilt feeling that a lot of other books/material on this subject have given me.

3 - Resilience - Eric Greitens

Written by a former Navy Seal, this book is comprised of a compilation of letters written by the author to a friend and former Navy Seal himself who is going through a rough patch in life (struggling with alcoholism, failed business, etc). I read this book before "The Obstacle Is the Way", but they have a lot in common. I also listened to this book on Audible during my commute (love this option for reading books, but the only disadvantage for me is I can't highlight passages the way I can with a real book or kindle).

What I liked about this book is that it wasn't all "Be tough, feel no emotions" - I was kind of expecting that coming from an author who was a seal. For me, it came across as a way to approach life accepting the things I cannot change, and having the courage to take action on the things that I can (sort of a modified serenity prayer).

GET TO ZE CHOPPA!

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm mildly obsessed with ze' Arnold. For me, he symbolizes strength, overcoming difficulty, and pushing yourself beyond your limits. I got into weightlifting when I was 18 - I had just had my first real breakup, and lifting weights was a great outlet for anger & frustration or any other emotion going on at the time. I saw some results fairly quickly (aka "Newbie Gains"). Over the years, my dedication and enthusiasm for weightlifting has waxed & waned, but I've found in the last few years a routine that works for me and a way to (imperfectly) stick to it. I want to introduce that routine here as well as the guy who penned it (Mike Matthews), and some other tips I use keep at it, even after the initial enthusiasm about working out has faded.

Mike Matthews - Bigger, Leaner, Stronger

I got introduced to Mike Matthews and his website Muscle For Life by a friend. Mike's book "Bigger Leaner Stronger" lays out a routine that's all based around "Progressive Overload". Many other routines focus on the 8-10 reps range, but Mike's program is all about the 4-6 rep range (with a few exceptions). The idea in a nutshell is that by working in this range, we can actually get stronger, and only be getting progressively stronger will we see results in the mirror.

In college I was doing routines that focused on 8-10 reps, and was on the "seafood diet" (If I saw food, I ate it). I got bigger, maxing out at about 205 lbs (I'm 6'0"), and did get stronger, but I've found that by following the "Bigger Leaner Stronger" program, I'm stronger than I was at 25 while being about 35 lbs lighter (I'm about 170 lbs these days). I also take diet a lot more seriously, and follow's Mike's advice in his book around cutting or bulking.

Another thing I like about Mike's routine is that he's very clear about not using steroids or other Performance Enhancing Drugs, and that was important to me. I've read Arnold's "Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding" and while it's a really valuable resource, he has also been open about using steroids over the years. Here's an article on steroids and training that might be interesting if you want to learn more about it: https://www.muscleforlife.com/side-effects-of-steroids/

Tips to Stick With It

Getting results in the gym can take time, and it's easy to get discouraged. I'm definitely not perfect at fitness or diet, but some of these strategies have helped me stay on track, or to get back on track quickly:

1) Listen to people who are better at fitness than me.

I listen to fitness podcasts and follow a few people on FB / Instagram that post about workouts & nutrition. I feel like it's important to constantly expose myself to people who are further along in their fitness / diet than I am to help keep myself motivated.

2) Don't plan for days off

If I've followed my lifting routine to the letter during the week, I in theory can have the weekends off. But what I've found is that most weeks, something comes up where I can't get in a lift during the week. So I plan to do at least 15 minutes of exercise every day, and if I miss a lift day, I make it up on the weekend.

3) Track using the app "Body Tracker"

Progress can be slow, and it can be hard to stay motivated if it feels like the results aren't coming. Using Body Tracker helps me to empirically track my progress (i.e. weight, waist measurements, etc), so that my evaluation of progress isn't just based on how I feel but is more about data.

4) Evaluate if something isn't working

I've had to circle back a few times and re-look at my approach to getting results when they just weren't coming. This has made me evaluate my form on exercises, which weren't always great, or look at how my diet has actually been (I use myfitnesspal to track calories). My "memory" can say I've been following my diet closely, but if I look at the data, sometimes I've had more cheat meals in a week than I remember.

5) Enjoy some fitness humor

Goals are important, but I think it's also important to have a sense of humor about what we're doing. There's a bunch of fitness humor accounts on social media out there, and here's one of my favorite fitness humor vids:

Kevin Eldridgetag:kevin-eldridge.com,2005:Post/49959562017-12-27T14:51:29-08:002023-03-02T00:30:35-08:00My Experience with Chronic Pain, and How I Beat It
Back in June of 2012, I developed chronic wrist pain which later involved my elbows and forearms. As a Guitarist, this was a big scare as I had been planning to make the plunge into full-time music for a little over a year. My plans for long practice sessions and lots of gigs had to be diverted while I tried to figure out what was wrong with my body.

Over the next ~9 months, I tried acupuncture, massage, chiropractor visits, diet tweaks, rest, icing, compression, tennis elbow straps, and probably a few other "remedies" that I'm forgetting. I spent a lot of money and time on all of these, and none of it really worked. I stopped lifting weights, tried stretching, and at best, some of these offered temporary relief. Doctors said it was RSI (Repetitive Stress Injury) and/or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

It wasn't until I came across the work of "Dr. Sarno" that I began to get hope again that my body could return to normal function.

Who is Dr. Sarno?

Dr. Sarno passed away this year, and during his life he authored three books about a symptom he calls "TMS". In a nutshell, his premise is that many of the chronic pain conditions that you hear about today (i.e. chronic back pain, RSI, Whiplash related injuries, and many others) are nothing more than a trick that the brain plays to ensure that person does not ever confront strong, powerful emotions that are buried deep in the subconscious - the most powerful of which is rage. For me this meant that there was nothing wrong with my arms & wrists, and that my brain was creating this brain as a distraction from strong emotions that I was not conscious of.

His prescription is fairly simple - first acknowledge that the source of the pain is psychological, and that there is nothing physically wrong with the body. Then resume normal activity as soon as possible, and concentrate on what's going on in your life that would be contributing to deeply repressed, unconscious feelings.

My first reaction to his material was skepticism, however I was desperate enough to give it a look and try what he suggested. Sarno goes on to describe the personality types of people that are susceptible to TMS - people who are perfectionist, exhibit "good-ism" character traits, or otherwise put a lot of pressure on themselves.

What sold it for me was the sheer number of people who reported getting better by following his advice (either by reading his books or seeing him in person). Check out this website that documents thousands of peoples accounts of how they over-came their chronic pain by listening to what Dr Sarno had to say: http://www.thankyoudrsarno.com/

My Return to Normal Activity

After reading up on Dr Sarno and reading a few of his books, I followed the recommended advice:

* Resume normal activity

* Examine what's going on in life, and what could lead to unconscious rage.

* Continue re-reading his books until the pain went away.

What this all meant for me was to get back to hitting the weights in the gym, and to play as much guitar as I wanted. I also had to recognize the "coincidence" that my pain started within a week of a serious breakup with a woman I'd been in a relationship with for over 6 years. As I re-read his book, I identified more and more with the "good-ist" person that he describes, and learned to go easy on myself and not expect myself to be perfect.

It took a few months, and there was still some pain here and there, but I slowly got better, and before I knew it I was back to working out how I used to work out and playing gigs without any pain at all.

I remember feeling doomed to a life of not being able to do what I wanted to do and being a slave to the pain, and I'm so grateful to Dr. Sarno's work for helping me in my life, and to many other people that shared their story which helped me believe the psychological basis of the pain I was experiencing.

Life moves too fast (though sometimes it feels like not fast enough).

I haven't posted anything on this site in a while as I primarily was using it to promote upcoming shows, and I've taken some time off of shows. That said, I've decided to use this as my personal and music blog going forward, so you can expect to see some more content here on various topics (fitness, music, life stuff, where to get the best pizza in LA, motorcycle geekouts, etc).

Before I dig in on some updates, I sincerely hope you and your family have an excellent holiday season. For me this can be a stressful time of year, and though much of my family and friends are miles away, I am grateful to have some seriously rad people in my life and look forward to life slowing down a bit as we approach 2018.

Updates:

1) Guitarist On Board Sticker

Perhaps as a reaction to many of my friends adult'ing hard and having kids, I've taken the "Baby On Board" sticker idea and put a Guitarist twist on it. The process of creating this was fun, and it's been my first experience of having something made and working to sell it through amazon. No matter how it shakes out, I'm glad this product exists, and I've got one on my car (which was where the idea came from in the first place - I wanted to be able to get one for myself). You can check it out here:

2) Vocal Lessons

Beginning a beginner at an instrument is hard! I've avoided singing like the plague all of my musical life, and I'm finally bucking down (wayyyy imperfectly) and trying to put in 30 minutes a day of practicing. It's cool to see little bits of progress, but man it can be challenging, especially when it feels like I just can't get it. I remember feeling that way when I was learning guitar too though, and maybe it was because I was younger or something, but I remember pushing through those rough patches of practicing to no avail and finally achieving breakthroughs in my technique or understanding of the instrument. As a dude who struggles with always wanting to look like I've got it all together, jumping into a new skill that I don't have a natural ability for has been really a positive move, and is helping me become a better teacher for guitar as well.

I'm taking lessons with Radina at Vocals On Stage, and I highly recommend taking lessons with her. She also does Skype lessons if you're not in the LA area. Her website is: http://vocals-on-stage.com/

3) Viper Room Jam on Monday Nighs

I've been hanging out at the Viper Room on Monday Nights for the Sunset Jam put on by Erik Himel. Erik does a killer job of running a tight jam, and it's appreciated. Every week is a different theme (i.e. "The 80's", "Yacht Rock", "A Night of Tom Petty"), and the musicians who play here are F'ing Awesome.

Here's a vid from one of the Jams this year:

We're playing around LA in the next few months, and we're kicking off a "Friday nights at Skinny's" in North Hollywood starting in March.

TOP TEN PODCAST

My friend and fellow LA Soul Project player Ben Eisen hosts a really cool music Podcast called "All Time Top Ten" podcast. I was recently a guest on his show (along with John O'Kennedy) and we covered the "Top 10 Blues/Rock Guitarist". Check out the episode here, and if you like it, give his facebook page a like:

GEAR

I've been good (mostly) about not getting much gear lately, BUT I have been using the Line 6 Helix at a few gigs lately (Disclaimer: I work for Line 6). If you haven't checked it out yet, do yourself a favor and check out the website and try one out in a Guitar Center (if you can find one - they have been selling out pretty quickly):

NEW ALBUM ON iTUNES

Jamie Lynn Hard Band's new album "The Let Go" was officially released on iTunes on Feb17th of this year. It's a little different from previous JLH albums, but it's gotten some great reviews so far and I think it's a very cohesive album. Dan Cardinal at Dimension Studios in JP did an awesome job capturing the band and Jamie's vocals. Special thanks to Zach McNees for mixing & to JP Masters for mastering. And to Chris Enright for laying some great keys on the Album!

Have a free listen to the tracks here: http://music.jamielynnhart.com/album/the-let-go

I'm a huge fan of all the tunes, but just for a "sampling" approach, be sure to listen to the opening track "All Defeats" to set the tone of the album, "Bad" to help you bust out some dance moves in your kitchen, "Sidelines" to blast in your car with summer weather and the windows down, and then get ready to really slow it down with "What Could Be". When we were writing this tune, Doug Standley (the amazing drummer in JLH Band) kept pulling for a slower tempo, and dammit, he was right - the song comes in with a slow, crawling, just "gahhhh" drum intro, and that really sets the stage for one of my favorite tunes on the album - super emotive, very minimal and...well just listen to it. Or even better, go see it live!

You can buy the album on iTunes or on Jamie's Website: http://music.jamielynnhart.com/album/the-let-go

And for a list of JLH shows in the Boston area check them out here: http://www.jamielynnhart.com/shows/

GAS

Gas you say? Kevin, has your blog post turned crude? Well I'm not saying it won't, but for right now "GAS" means "Gear Acquisition Syndrome", and I've got a bad case of it!!! My latest Object of Desire is the new Line 6 G70 Wireless Guitar Rig (full disclaimer: I work for Line 6), and I'm planning to indulge! New Lesson Material - Coming Soon!

I recently worked with a Guitar Student who wanted a quick "tune up" lesson on some chord comping options when playing blues tunes. We came up with 3-5 different approaches for how to play along to various blues songs ("Red House", "Route 66", and a few others), and we made audio recordings and transcribed the chords as aids for him to be able to play along with. I'm planning to upload these files and give the "Lessons" page a fresh look and add a spot for this material (and other material like it) to be posted. Stay tuned!

Live Music!

I think it's easy for musicians/performers to forget to go out and see music (or any art form really) - at least I've fallen into this mentality many times. I'm now making an effort to go out and see more music, whether it be friends bands I'm supporting, or just randomly hanging somewhere where there's free music, or going to a huge festival. I forget how inspiring it is to see other people's work, and for me I've found it helpful in my own craft - whether it be just being motivated by the sheer "AWESOMENESS" of someone else's song / live performance, or getting inspired to borrow some of their ideas and apply it in my own way, or just getting the itch to be on stage again myself. Feel free to comment on this below - how do you get inspired when you see live music or other forms or art (film, art, theater - whatever!)?

If you made it all the way through this longer post - Kudos to you! I started out the month by flying out to Seattle for Becky's friend Claire's wedding; we met up in Portland OR for a few days and then took the bus over to Seattle. Seeing Becky was awesome, and the time spent in Portland / Seattle was relaxing and a blast.

Life in LA is going well - my biggest impression so far is how fast things happen out here. And LA is HUGE! Which means there are a lot of cool venues that I've been trying to check out. I've linked up with a few bands so far, and it was nice to play a couple gigs last week (I definitely was itching to play out again). I'm playing with an awesome original band called Lunar Rogue ( http://lunarrogueband.com/ ) and a 70's Rock Cover Band called "Good Looking Bastards". The Bastahds and I are starting up a weekly residency at "Loaded" - we'll be playing every Tuesday night at midnight. Here's the Facebook Event Page

Last week Good Looking Bastards played at "Good Times at Davie Wayne's" in Hollywood, and Lunar Rogue rocked the Infusion night club at Universal City. Arriving here was bittersweet though, as it ended an amazing 2 week road-trip with my awesome girlfriend Becky. We traveled through Austin, New Orleans, Nashville, the Grand Canyon, and survived a friendly deer poking our tent all night while camping in Colorado. If you're interested in hearing more about that and our other stops, you can check out our travel blog here: KevBexToLA.Wordpress.com. A huge thanks to friends who hosted us along the way: Ashley, Jessica & Eric, Jon, & Abby.

I'm currently staying with my good buddy Brendan Keane Barr and his wife Allison in Santa Monica (7 streets from the beach...rough life!), and starting in July it looks like I'll be moving to the valley. Here in LA there is what's called "June Gloom", meaning that the weather isn't 100% perfect all day long (womp womp womp). It starts out slightly hazy in the morning, and then by 3pm it's back to beautiful. I've been enjoying some oceanside runs, the opportunity to practice a lot during the day, and tonight I'm going to go check out some music. I don't expect to have any gigs lined up just yet, but I am itching to play and I hear some blues jams calling my name...

So remember when you were back in school and a 71% on the big test got you a C-, and while the 'rents might not have been stoked with that, at least you never had to take that damn class again? Well, with Pledge Music (the way that we are funding the recording, mixing, and mastering of the new Jamie Lynn Hart Band Album), it's not quite like that - it's basically "All or nothing", "Go BIG or go home", "A+ or Bust"...(I can keep going). Basically if the funding goal isn't met, then we don't get any of the previously donated cashola and sadly this would significantly delay the new album coming out. Right now the campaign is at 71% of the goal, and there's 7 days left. If you haven't seen the promo video already, I urge you to watch the hilarious Pledge Music Campaign Video (thanks again to Andy Wesby for his help!), and if you can, please donate to help us get this album to your ears. There are still some great pledge incentives left (including Handwritten Lyric Sheets, Exclusive T-shirts, and handmade jewelry from Jamie herself - just to name a few) and even just pre-ordering the album is a huge help for the band. And I think you're going to like the new songs on this album - we worked our butts off writing and it's got a distinctly different sound from "Anticipate", though it's still sounds like JLH Band. We're proud of it, and can't wait to share it with you.

Last but not least, stay tuned for some new content for the website - I'm going to add some video lessons, gear reviews, and other content (let me know if you have any other requests / ideas).

Thanks for reading!

-KeVKevin Eldridgetag:kevin-eldridge.com,2005:Post/29567342014-05-19T10:42:21-07:002017-01-14T09:20:58-08:00Studio, Pledge for JLH Band Album, JLH Gig this Wednesday, and Road-trip Starts Friday!Last week was awesomely busy! First and foremost, from Monday to Thursday the Jamie Lynn Hart Band basically lived at Dimension Studios in JP to track the new JLH Band album. It was such a great experience to track the tunes we've been working on for a year or so. I heard the rough mixes this weekend and I'm super excited for this album to come out! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for it in the late summer / early fall. And it's not too late to donate, as mixing and mastering are expensive! The band is in a really good state right now, and the sound we've cooked up is going to make this album great. I'm sad to leave, but something tells me our paths will cross again. But to all Boston friends - please keep going to JLH Band shows! I'm excited to see and hear the next incarnation of the band.

Stay tuned for updates on the road-trip out to LA, as well as some news once I get settled into life on the West Coast 8-)

-KeVKevin Eldridgetag:kevin-eldridge.com,2005:Post/29156922014-05-02T10:34:52-07:002021-07-20T09:37:59-07:00New JLH Band Album, Moving to LA!!!, and last gigs in New England (for a while)Hey!

May and June are shaping up to be exciting months, so I wanted to share a little about what's new and coming up:

1) Moving to LA!

That's right - I'm taking the plunge and moving to LA for a change of pace. I've lived in / around Boston for 11 years now (!), and it's been so f'ing awesome. It's been a good one here so far. Jamie Lynn Hart and the band and I are gearing up for a Live Album at Tupelo Hall in Londonderry NH on 8/29/13. We're stoked to be recording a live album (our first one!), and we'll have some older material as well as some new songs to debut at this gig. You can get tickets here.

I also had the pleasure of doing a recording project with Jessica Ryan earlier this summer. We're waiting for the tunes to finish being mastered, and then I'll have streaming versions of the tunes posted on my website. Jessica was too cool to work with, and she sounded GREAT in the sessions, so I'm really excited for the final versions of these tunes to come out.

Saturday - JLH Band is playing with Shannon Corey at the Backyard in Brighton - fo' free! http://www.facebook.com/events/509035539132140/?ref=3

Kevin Eldridgetag:kevin-eldridge.com,2005:Post/2036632012-08-23T01:14:34-07:002021-07-20T09:40:18-07:00Electro-Harmonix Saved My Gig!Here's the scenario: You get on stage, plug in, start running through a few chords, but something sounds kinda...funny. You play through a few more chords and think "crap, my amp is acting really weird". A few seconds later a loud fizzing noise confirms it - yup, you're amp has definitely got problems. You hit the standby switch and realize that this amp won't be able to get you through this gig....

This happened to me at a gig a few months ago, and it turned out that one of the el-84 power tubes in my Crate Palomino V32 had gone bad (I didn't find this out until later).

So what to do? We just got on stage, the whole band was ready, and I had to figure something out. Fortunately, I had bought a back-up solid state amp by Electro-Hamonix called the "22 Caliber". It's a stomp box sized amp that connects directly to the speakers in your formerly-working tube amp. So what I did was I plugged the output of my last effects pedal (my Fatboost 2 in this case) into the "22 Caliber". Then I unplugged my speaker connection from my amp and plugged the speakers into the output of the 22 Caliber. After only a minute of making these connections, I was back in action.

(Stomp Box Sized - Easy to keep in your gig bag as a back-up).

Check out the Electro-Harmonix Product Page here: http://www.ehx.com/products/22-caliber

And the sound was actually pretty good! This partciular model has a diode based clipping method to simulate the natural tube breakup. It worked great for getting me through the gig until I was able to repair my tube amp (which turned out to be a pretty easy fix).

Bottom line- I learned the value of always having a backup plan for when gear breaks or stuff goes wrong. Definitely check out the Electro-Harmonix website - they make a beefier version of the 22 caliber called the 44 magnum, which I might get as it provides more headroom.

I admittedly haven't been going out to as many shows as I'd like to lately, but last night was a good reminder to turn off the TV, get out there, support our local artists, and have a great time.
